What Do Watchmen Do? They Warn!
*Isaiah 62:6 On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have posted watchmen; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD shall take no rest for yourselves,.....
Watchmen warn against enemies that are coming and even enemies in our midst. What would an enemy in our midst look like? It could look like sin. The Lord tells Ezekiel that he is a watchmen and He says this to Ezekiel:
*Ezekiel 3:17,19-21 'Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me: (19) Yet, if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul. (20) 'Again, when a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die; because you did not give him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood I will require at your hand. (21) Nevertheless, if you warn the righteous man that the righteous should not sin, and he does not sin, he shall surely live because he took warning; also you will have delivered your soul.'
These are very serious words. We are to be warning ourselves and others about sin and the dangers it imposes. In Torah Portion Pinchas, the Israelites - God's people - are engaging in the sin of immorality, and then they go right into the sin of worshiping an idol, Baal-Peor. This shows us that sin leads to more sin. Sin multiplies; it does not remain singular - it always leads to other sins. When we hear the Holy Spirit convicting us, we need to be warned and quickly turn away from the sin that is tempting us.
Today the church can be very lenient on sin, but the mercy of the Lord is to lead to repentance. Repentance means turning and going the other way. It never means to just ignore and condone. In a world where God's standards are being ignored, we, His people are the ones who hold them up. We shine His light in a dark world. Are we perfect? Of course, we are not, but we are pursuing righteous with all our hearts and turning from sin defines our lifestyle.
If we are warned of any sin, may we be quick to turn and go the other way.
*Acts 3'19 'Repent, then, and turn to God, so that he will forgive your sins.'
*Philiippians 1:10 'So that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.'
